TARI Insect Collection

The Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute (formerly Department of Agriculture, Govermment Research Institute Formosa) was established in 1903. Although researchers at the Applied Zoology Division were dedicated to pest control, they also devoted time to collecting insects. The actual initiation of a formal collection began in 1925 for the purpose of research on insect taxonomy.
Agricultural insects are well represented in the collections at TARI. Important crop pests collected during the Japanese colonial period, the beginning of Taiwan retrocession or the present time are carefully curated. Comparison of the crop pests collected at different periods reveals changes in the agricultural insect fauna through various stages. This aspect makes our collection uniqe and historically meaningful. This collection is scientifically important in facilitating the research and preparation of taxonomic papers by native and foreign scholars. It also plays an educational role by allowing visits by sutdents and the public.
